Installing a pocket door requires removing a section of the existing wall to accommodate the framing and rails of the pocket door, so plan on demolishing and re-finishing the plaster or drywall on the wall after the door is installed.

Installing Pocket Door

If you choose to paint the door while it’s in the pocket, be sure to paint both sides of the door, especially if it’s got a hollow core. If you paint only one side, the moisture alone will warp the door. Cut out for the handle before you paint; you may find it easier to make this cut with the door lying between sawhorses. One last point—install adhesive on the bottom of the pocket frame where it rests on the floor (this, of course, depends on the frame’s structure). A strong bond to the floor will help stop the pocket from movement.

Reinforce the pocket structure by installing two sets of pocket door "stiffeners" (thin metal supports supplied with the kit). One set, called jamb stiffeners, is first attached to the header, plumbed up and then fastened to the floor. Another pair of stiffeners is positioned and attached in the middle of the pocket framing. The instructions that come with your pocket door kit will explain precisely where these stiffeners, called side-split jambs, need to be installed.

The most important thing is to realize what the pocket door may be sharing with the standing wall. It’s possible that the wall on either side of the framing as well as above the door will enclose electrical lines, air ducts, and plumbing. With new construction or larger remodeling projects , this may not be an issue, as you can flush this out ahead of time on your own or with the help of a remodeling contractor But with an existing wall, don’t swing a single sledgehammer before determining if these elements exist and if they can be relocated. Once that’s complete, you will need to do some deconstruction prior to installing a pocket door to adjust the door frame and jamb. Steps for Installation

Installing The New Pocket Door

pocket door installation san diegoHow long does it take to install a pocket door? Framing an opening during new construction takes no longer than framing for a swinging door. A retrofit will take longer. Installing the pocket-door frame and hardware and hanging the door usually takes less than 30 minutes. Johnson Hardware’s Universal pocket-door frames have several features which speed installation.

Hang door- Rollers mount to top of door and hang on a metal track provided with the kit. Be sure your door is not warped, or it will rub on the pocket frame! 5. Sheet rock- Hang sheet rock over the new frame. Be careful to use screws that are short enough that that won’t penetrate through the frame and scratch or scrape the door with their pointy tips. This will be hard to correct later, once the wall is re- assembled. 6. Trim- Trim around the new door installation. Be careful about penetration here too. If you want tomething fancier, there are online sites that sell reproduction hardware.

As with most home construction projects, your first step is to do the framing. For a pocket door, the rough opening will seem gigantic, because you’re actually framing for the width of two doors (your framing needs to accommodate the door for both the open and closed positions). Frame your opening to the width the manufacturer of your pocket door kit suggests - usually twice the width of your door, plus 1" - so if you’re installing a 32" door the rough opening will be 65" wide. bathroom doors with frosted glass

Choosing the hardware for the pocket door is quite easy as long as the basics are understood well. One of the most important issues the homeowner should consider is the door thickness as well as the clearance between the trim moulding and the face of the door. There are times when the trim moulding is placed too closely to the door. This gives off a neat vibe; however there is not enough space for the pocket door pulls to operate correctly. That is why the thickness of the door is an essential component the homeowner should know when buying pocket door hardware.

Installing one means moving framing around and also means your project is spilling into the room adjacent to the bathroom. Construction of the pocket door will involve the drywall of the next room, sometimes not just the drywall on the wall, but also the ceiling, this opens up texture matching issues and repainting. You’re also going to be dealing with trim in regard to base boards also. interior bathroom doors
